I love model trains. I came across my uncle’s layout when I was about ten, and I was hooked! I built a couple of 4’x8′ layouts during my adolescent years, bought my first Athearn blue box Baltimore & Ohio F7 A/B units and 5 heavyweight passenger car kits (that I still own!), and then paused my interest for about 35 years as life took over.
I’ve recently rekindled my interest and now I’m all in again! I’m currently building my dream layout. I’ve learned carpentry, wood finishing, soldering, electrical, and various other skills. I’m loving it.
I’m partial to modeling Santa Fe, however, I’ve developed an addiction and am now modeling all the classics including the 20th Century Limited, the California Zephyr, the Broadway Limited, and several Super Chiefs! I used to love diesel and freight cars, and although I still do, I’m gravitating towards steam engines and heavyweight passenger-car consists.
It’s truly the greatest hobby in the world.

It began twenty-four years ago with the infamous TYCO red Burlington GP20, New Haven box car, flat car with tractors, auto loader trailer car, gondola, rounded off with the silver Burlington Route caboose. Next up was the Union Pacific TYCO 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive with six streamlined passenger blue box kits in Santa Fe. These two consists were the prize of my collection as a kid.
It wasn’t about prototypical modeling. I mean, who would see a Union Pacific locomotive pulling Santa Fe cars?! It was about the countless hours of fun watching them run, which ignited my passion for model trains!
Today, my collection has expanded to over 500 locomotives and over 50 passenger-car consists, but the TYCO sets can still put a smile on my face with the childhood imagination that has never left.
